Workforce Development

SUNY Adirondack Continuing Education provides a variety of noncredit courses that support career preparation and professional development across a range of industries. These include the StartUp ADK small-business startup and expansion program (offered in partnership with Warren and Washington LDCs), wastewater treatment courses, ServSafe food safety certification, Notary Public license exam preparation, computer training courses and more.

SUNY Adirondack programs

The Office of Continuing Education offers a variety of online and hybrid (face-to-face courses with an online component) noncredit courses through Zoom live lecture, Blackboard and other learning platforms.

The course will begin with the basics of HVAC/R and move into an in-depth breakdown of each category within HVAC/R knowledge needed in order to build a solid technical foundation. Content will focus on:

  • Electrical skills/troubleshooting
  • Refrigeration and principles of thermodynamics
  • Pipe sizing and types of fittings used in HVAC/R
  • Reading and interpretation of wiring schematics
  • Use and handling of HVAC multimeter, manometer, psychrometer, refrigeration gauges, and temperature probes
  • Compressor types and how they mechanically move refrigerant through a system
  • Types of heat exchangers
  • Electrical motors, controls, switches; how they are used and how they mechanically operate
  • Volt/multimeter
  • Interpretation of electrical diagrams and symbols
  • Hands on use of electrical HVAC simulator
  • Brazing and soldering techniques
  • Identifying types of pumps/water flow controls/water zone valves
  • Common piping configurations in residential and commercial boilers

Decker is a technician who organizes the industrial maintenance contract for a local paper plant and has 10 years of experience in HVAC.

Healthcare Pathways

SUNY Future of Work Centers grant-funded programs

SUNY Adirondack is proud to announce Healthcare Pathways, a new program funded by a State University of New York (SUNY) Future of Work Centers grant. This allows SUNY Adirondack to develop career pathways and support individuals pursuing training and education for careers in health care.

Support is available for participants in noncredit training or degree programs, including those pursuing careers such as:

  • certified nurse aide (CNA)
  • home health aide (HHA)
  • personal care aide (PCA)
  • those studying Health Education, Nursing or related fields at SUNY Adirondack

This program allows SUNY Adirondack the flexibility to offer financial support in the way of books, uniforms, gas cards and technology, as well as access to emergency funds so students can overcome barriers to complete their education or employment retention.

Grant-funded opportunities for Workforce Training

Participants must be 18 years or older and residents of New York state to qualify.

SUNY Adirondack Continuing Education is offering the following courses with free tuition through the SUNY Transformation Grant and Reimagine grants for those who qualify:

SUNY Adirondack Continuing Education has partnered with the Learning Resources Network (LERN) to offer several other online professional development certificates and courses. Learn about negotiation, data analysis, digital marketing, video marketing or social media for business.

CareerStep Online Training Programs

SUNY Adirondack Continuing Education partners with CareerStep to offer noncredit certification training. Programs include Behavioral and Psychiatric Health Technician, Medical Administrative Assistant, Medical Assistant, Medical Coding and Billing for Outpatient Services, Patient Care Technician, Pharmacy Technician, Veterinary Assistant and Veterinary Receptionist.

New York Real Estate Pre-Licensing Online Certification Program NEW!

Online course with open enrollment available throughout the year

Registration takes place online through the CE Shop. This online course is designed to prepare students for the New York real estate certification exam. The course consists of 77 hours of instruction and covers the following key topics:

  • Real estate principles, including property rights, contracts, agency relationships and real estate transactions
  • Real estate license law and regulations in New York

Other key principles: The course covers 25 additional key principles related to real estate, including:

  • Real estate finance
  • Residential property management
  • Commercial leases
  • Real estate investment property basics
  • Real estate mathematics
  • Property insurance

Throughout the course, students will have access to interactive materials, including PDF resources, quizzes and an Exam Prep simulation test. These materials are designed to help students understand and apply concepts covered in the course.

To successfully complete the course, students must pass a final exam. The exam will cover all the material covered in the course, and students must score at least 70 percent to pass. All final exams must be physically proctored in the state of New York. Upon completing the course and passing the exam, students will be eligible to apply for a New York real estate license. Additional eligibility requirements may apply, and students should check with the New York State Department of State Division of Licensing Services for more information.
