"I love teaching at SUNY Adirondack because it’s never boring. I get to guide/reassure introductory students who are a little afraid of chemistry and I get nerd-sniped by orgo students who ask great questions. Plus nontraditional-aged students get my jokes! It's great!"

Biography

Charlie's research background is in inorganic chemistry (specifically in synthetic organometallic chemistry and green chemistry). While in grad school at Illinois, he discovered he enjoyed teaching far more than research. He promptly joined Notre Dame's ACE (a teaching service program for under-resourced Catholic schools), which sent him to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. After teaching high school chemistry for six years, Charlie realized how much he missed teaching at the college level, which is what drew him to SUNY Adirondack, where he is finally at home.

Education

Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Notre Dame University, 2004; Master of Science in Chemistry from University of Illinois, 2006; M.Ed. from Notre Dame, 2009

Hobbies and interests

In addition to spending time with his lovely wife, Kelly, and their two boys, Seamus and Isaiah, Charlie enjoys playing and watching sports. He competes in hockey (mostly goaltending for beer leagues in Saratoga) and fencing (mostly sabre and épée at tournaments in Vermont). His favorite summer activities are fishing, kayaking and kayak-fishing, and winter activities are ice fishing and pond hockey (there is a way to combine those two, too; he'd be happy to explain if you are curious).
