Advanced standing at SUNY Adirondack

SUNY Adirondack offers students advanced standing, granting credit for classes they have taken, work and military experience, and exams. 

These transfer credits are reviewed by the Registrar’s Office after a student is accepted to SUNY Adirondack. Official transcripts must be sent to the Registrar’s Office for review. Transfer credit is applied to the student’s academic record upon enrollment. 

Advanced standing credits

Advanced Placement (AP)

SUNY Adirondack recognizes the College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) exams and awards credit for successful completion of AP exams in the same manner transfer credits are awarded. Successful completion of AP exams is indicated by grades of 3, 4 or 5. Credits awarded from AP exams must meet degree requirements in an appropriate academic area. They can also be used for elective credit. A maximum of 34 credits may be awarded. These credits will not automatically transfer to another college.

College Level Examination Program (CLEP)

SUNY Adirondack recognizes credit earned through testing by the College Level Examination Program (CLEP). SUNY Adirondack awards credit for successful completion of CLEP tests in the same manner transfer credits are awarded. No grade is assigned to these credits recognized to be the equivalent of a “C” level score or higher. Credit can be granted for these exams, except where noted, but it is always recommended you speak to an advisor before registering to take a CLEP test. These credits will not automatically transfer to another college.

Cambridge International Advanced (A)

SUNY Adirondack will award credit for certain courses under the Cambridge International Advanced (A) Level program. A maximum of 34 credits may be awarded. These credits will not automatically transfer to another college.

Cambridge International Advanced Subsidiary (AS)

SUNY Adirondack will award credit for certain courses under the Cambridge International Advanced Subsidiary (AS) Level program. A maximum of 34 credits may be awarded. These credits will not automatically transfer to another college.

DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST)

The college recognizes many DANTES (Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support) subject standardized exams and awards credit for successful completion as recommended by the American Council on Education (ACE). The following DSST exams may be used to earn course credit. While credit can be granted for these exams, it is always recommended to speak to an advisor before registering to take a DSST test. These credits will not automatically transfer to another college.

Excelsior College External Degree Examinations (UEXCEL)

SUNY Adirondack accepts some credits for successful completion of Excelsior College External Degree Examinations in the same manner transfer credits are awarded. The following UEXCEL exams may be used to earn course credit. While credit can be granted for these exams, it is always recommended you speak to an advisor before registering to take a UEXCEL test. These credits will not automatically transfer to another college.

Industry and BOCES certification

SUNY Adirondack will award credit for certain industry certifications, licensures or BOCES program completions. A maximum of 34 credits may be awarded. These credits will not automatically transfer to another college.

International Baccalaureate (IB)

SUNY Adirondack will award credit for IB Diploma courses on either the Standard Level (SL) or High Level (HL). Certificate students taking the following exams will also receive credit. Minimum scores vary. Please request an official transcript be sent to the Office of the Registrar at the College. A maximum of 34 credits may be awarded. IB certificate students taking the following exams will also receive credit. These credits will not automatically transfer to another college.
