Wilderness medicine class offers emergency training for health careers
A comprehensive eight-day introductory course in emergency and wilderness medicine will launch in June at SUNY Adirondack.
The curriculum will provide hands-on learning experiences beneficial to students interested in applying to a health professions school. Students also will earn CPR and Wilderness First Responder certification.
At the end of the course, students will have learned the basics of emergency medicine and valuable skills in preventing, assessing and treating wilderness, rural and austere-setting medical crises. Additionally, students receive guidance from medical school faculty regarding admissions processes and career paths.
The class, taught by University of Colorado School of Medicine faculty and physicians, will run June 3-12. Tuition for the three-credit-hour class is $549 for in-state students, plus fees. Housing and meal options are available.

The course complements SUNY Adirondack’s two-year Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Adventure Sports: Leadership and Management. Students in the program engage in outdoor education and expeditions to develop leadership, management and hands-on experience with outdoor adventure sports.
