College raises awareness of prevalence of suicide in young people in U.S.

QUEENSBURY, New York (April 11, 2022) — SUNY Adirondack partners with American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to offer Out of the Darkness, a suicide awareness walk.

The event, which kicks off at 10 a.m. April 30 on the college’s Queensbury campus, is a fundraiser to help American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) continue research, offer educational programs, advocate for public policy, raise awareness and support survivors of suicide loss.

“We are thrilled to be hosting our second annual Out of the Darkness Campus walk at SUNY Adirondack,” said Holly Irion, assistant professor of Counseling at SUNY Adirondack. “So many of our students have been touched in some way by suicide loss. Bringing our campus and wider community together over this often taboo and misunderstood topic is important.”

According to AFSP statistics, suicide is the second-leading cause of death for people between the ages of 10 and 34 in the United States. More Americans suffer from depression than from coronary disease, cancer and HIV/AIDS, affecting between 5 and 8 percent of those ages 18 and older.

Out of the Darkness Campus Walks are AFSP’s signature student fundraising series, engaging youth and young adults in the fight to prevent suicide.
