QUEENSBURY, New York (Sept. 23, 2024) — SUNY Adirondack is excited to announce it will host Fresh Check Day from noon to 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, on the Lower Quad of the college's Queensbury campus.
This program, developed by Jordan Porco Foundation, is designed to bring together the campus community to check on the mental health and wellness of college students. The event is free and open to all students, faculty and staff.
Organized by SUNY Adirondack's Counseling Division in partnership with various campus departments and student volunteers, Fresh Check Day aims to create a supportive and engaging atmosphere. The event will feature a vibrant expo-like setting with interactive exhibits, food, prizes and giveaways. Should there be inclement weather, the event will move to Northwest Bay Conference Center in Adirondack Hall.
Highlights include booths that offer peer-to-peer messages and activities designed to educate and engage students on mental health topics such as stress management, anxiety, depression and suicide prevention. There will be opportunities for students to connect with their peers and campus resources in a positive, community-focused environment.
Exciting prizes and giveaways will be available, encouraging active participation from attendees. Enjoy food provided by Pies on Wheels and Stewart's Shops.
"This is an exciting opportunity for all campus community members to come together for a fun, engaging and uplifting event that highlights the importance of prioritizing mental health," said Beth Braxton, associate professor of Counseling, chair of the Counseling Division and advisor to the Active Minds campus club. "SUNY Adirondack has made a significant investment in our students' mental health and wellness, and Fresh Check Day is another example of our commitment to their overall well-being."
"There is often a fun buzz around campus at the start of the semester," Braxton said. "Fresh Check Day is an opportunity to harness that energy and elevate student voices, de-stigmatize talking about mental health, and encourage students to get involved."
