Physical Education Studies

SUNY Adirondack offers a Physical Education Studies AS degree designed to help students transfer to a four-year college as a Physical Education major. Half the required courses can be taken online.

The program prepares students to be effective communicators and leaders in the athletic teaching and coaching environments as well as introduces students to the basic concepts and career background of Physical Education. This curriculum also meets the SUNY General Education requirements and the SUNY Seamless Transfer Physical Education pathway. This is the first two years of a baccalaureate degree, upon graduation, students in this transfer path program will continue their study in a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a four-year college or university.

  • Principles and Organization of Athletics in Education
  • Statistics and Probability
  • First Aid and Safety
  • Internships with college athletic teams, professional hockey teams, and Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy settings will also be available

Elective classes and various physical education activity classes in:

  • individual and team sports
  • aquatic activity
  • fitness and wellness areas will enhance the students’ ability in teaching and coaching various sports teams in their future career

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will understand the importance of sound health and fitness principles as they relate to better health.
  2. Students will be exposed to a variety of activities providing them the opportunity to participate and engage in active learning.
  3. Students will demonstrate proficiency through knowledge and acquired skills enabling them various training experiences.
  4. Students will be prepared to create a safe, progressive, methodical and efficient activity based plan to enhance healthy habits and minimize risk of injury.
  5. Students will develop an appreciation of physical activity as a lifetime pursuit and a means to better health.
  6. Students will gain a basic understanding of anatomy, physiology, basic bio-mechanical principles and terminology.
  7. Students will develop coaching skills specific to their sport in order to provide leadership and organization within a team approach to success.
