Diversity Programs and Services
As the premier educational institution of the region, SUNY Adirondack is excited to recognize February as Black History Month. To honor and respect the contributions of Black people throughout history, we seek to inspire and motivate our on- and off-campus family to seek out opportunities to learn, participate and engage to advance the common good, throughout February and all year around.
Feb. 1
Access Outdoors for All: SUNY Adirondack Outdoor Education Program and the Office of the Chief Diversity Officer partner to attend a discussion led by Dom Mullins, Ph.D., groundbreaking adventurer and member of the first all-Black expedition to Mount Everest; Mirna Valerio, ultramarathon runner and author of "A Beautiful Work in Progress"; and Yunga Webb, North Country School’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion director.
"Class Act": SUNY Adirondack Men of Color Alliance (MOCA) offers a screening of the movie as part of the Black History Month Film Festival, to be held at 8 p.m. weekly in the Multipurpose Room in the Residence Hall. Free popcorn and pizza.
Feb. 2
Where’s the Humanity?: Black Men & The Police, a Brown Bag Lunch & Learn Roundtable for Action: At 12:45 p.m., panelists Alan Wishart, assistant professor in Criminal Justice and former police officer and retired police chief; Elijah Cullum, Criminal Justice student and community organizer; and Cornelius Gilbert, Ph.D., Chief Diversity Officer will discuss the issue in Scoville Hall, Room 206. Supported by The Offices of the President and the Chief Diversity Officer.
Feb. 3
Heart Healthy Day: Heart disease is the nation's No. 1 killer and African Americans are disproportionately affected. Learn more about this silent killer, and undergo a free screening. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Student Center. Wear red to help raise awareness!
Feb. 8
"Love and Basketball": SUNY Adirondack Men of Color Alliance (MOCA)'s Black History Month Film Festival continues, with an 8 p.m. screening in the Multipurpose Room in the Residence Hall. Free popcorn and pizza. Make a Valentine's Day gift.
Feb. 15
The Liberal Arts: Black Historical Perspectives & Today’s Rhetoric: The Office of the Chief Diversity Officer presents a Brown Bag Lunch & Learn Roundtable for Action with a lecture by Cornelius Gilbert, Ph.D., at 12:30 p.m. in Dearlove Hall, Room 211.

SUNY Adirondack defines “diversity” as a process of inclusion and equity that involves the entire college community. Central to the diversity process is the acknowledgment of the variation among people and the wide range of human experience, as well as the creation of safe spaces where individuals can communicate, share and understand differences. We believe every individual has the right to dignity and respect, and we value the integral role of diverse groups in the educational process and in the manner in which we operate as an institution. We hold our community responsible for providing a safe and affirming environment to all.
The college recognizes many types of diversity including, but not limited to: race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, biological sex, socio-economic status, age, regional background, marital status, parental status, ability, political beliefs, religious beliefs, educational achievement and occupation.
SUNY Adirondack defines “equity” as an ongoing process of ensuring the opportunity for access to and participation in SUNY Adirondack programs, policies and practices so all individuals may achieve their full potential. This process involves acknowledging diversity; eliminating the barriers that prevent the full participation of all people; and providing access to the appropriate resources for all to succeed.

SUNY Adirondack defines “inclusion” as an active process promoting the talents, beliefs, backgrounds and ways of living of all members of our community. Active inclusion creates an environment of involvement, respect, connection and ongoing engagement with diversity in all the communities (intellectual, social, cultural, geographic) with which individuals connect.

The Office of Residence Life works to assure that any student whose gender identity and/or sexual orientation raises concerns for them about housing accommodations receives personalized attention as needed for safety and a relaxed, comfortable living environment. SUNY Adirondack offers gender-neutral housing in its 400-student Residence Hall.
Yes, there are gender-neutral restrooms all around campus, specifically in:
- Student Center, first floor
- Eisenhart Hall, first floor
- Scoville Learning Center, first floor
Yes, SUNY Adirondack has a partnership with Hudson Headwaters to help students obtain better access to health care services, including regular on-campus visits from Hudson Headwaters Mobile Health Unit. Hudson Headwaters works with the college to educate the school's students and staff about the health network's services, specialties and its urgent care and primary care locations. Hudson Headwaters also provides periodic on-site seminars for current and prospective students and members of SUNY Adirondack's faculty and staff.
Hudson Headwaters is a not-for-profit corporation and federally qualified health center, offering primary care health services in the northeastern region of upstate New York, including Glens Falls and Queensbury.
All students purchase accident insurance through college fees. Learn more about this Accident Insurance Program.
In the event of a medical emergency, dial "0" for the college switchboard from any campus phone, dial 518-796-1344 for campus safety or activate any emergency blue phone located on campus grounds. Red phones located in building corridors may also be used for emergency situations.
