Start learning piano or enhance your existing piano-playing skills this summer! This course incorporates a variety of activities, including group lessons and individual instruction, solo playing and four and six hand playing. You’ll be able to try your hand at improvisation, music theory, song writing and composition. This course will also include an introduction to electronic keyboards and synthesizers. All levels are welcome.

Robotics with VEX IQ

Build a robot that you can control! You will work in teams to solve a series of increasingly complex problems by designing, constructing, and programming robots with ROBOTC graphical programming language to perform assigned tasks and compete with other teams. Using the VEX IQ Robotics Construction Kit, you will expand your skills in computer science and robotics, the basic elements of programming, and get a chance to develop and advance your problem-solving skills. VEX IQ brings the instruction of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) to the classroom.

Lights, Camera, Action

Have you ever thought about making your own film? If you’d like to revise, cast, film and edit a short film, don’t miss Lights, Camera, Action, formerly known as Write It! Cast It! Film It! Each summer, a new concept is introduced and you will be given the opportunity to serve as an actor, videographer, set designer, costumer, special effects technician, director, assistant director, tech director and/or art director. This course will even hold a “premiere showing” for your friends and family at the end of the program.

Water Rockets

Work in small groups to engineer rocket designs to later build, launch and analyze. Perfect your design, use creative problem solving to overcome issues and of course, blast your rocket farther and faster than the other teams. Test the laws of physics and reach new heights! In a fun way, Water Rockets is designed to introduce Newton’s Laws of Motion and the concept of forces acting on objects by studying the trajectory and distance of different water rocket designs. A rocket launch will be held at the end of the class to show off your design to family and friends.

Teen Animation Camp

Using software along with smartphones or iPads, Teen Animation Camp will give you the skills to bring your story or drawings to life! Learn about script writing, storyboarding, stop motion, hand-drawn animation and more. If you enjoy new media and digital art, then this is the program for you. Working with teams and individually, you’ll create giant stop motion animations to complete your film.

Jr. Toastmasters

Develop leadership skills for life and communicate confidently with conviction through active learning! Toastmasters is an international organization that helps enhance communication, public speaking and leadership skills. In this course, you will learn how to communicate and discover your leadership style through activities such as improvisation, charades, motivation boards and analysis of movie clips. For the grand finale, end with a presentation to your family and friends at the Summer Enrichment showcase event.

Forensic Science

Spend 24 fun-filled hours learning all you can about forensic science from Mr. Biss, who developed the first forensic science class at SUNY Adirondack back in 1987. You will:

  • Learn how to perform hands-on experiments dealing with evidence collection, blood splatter analysis, skeleton reconstruction and DNA fingerprinting, to name a few.
  • Stage a crime scene, then document it with sketches, digital cameras and videos. These will help you determine how the tool marks, fingerprints, blood splatter, footprints, DNA and more are used to figure out what happened and who did it.
  • Discuss firearms, bullet holes, arson, explosions, illegal drugs, counterfeit money and documents, as well as how they are discovered and analyzed by the modern forensic scientist.

Cartooning NEW!

It’s the Sunday Papers all over again! Learn how to draw cartoon characters and settings, and create single-panel cartoons and multi-panel comic strips. We’ll look at well-known cartoon characters and their creators, and you’ll see your own ideas come to life in your original comic strips.

The Play’s The Thing NEW!

If you love the theater, this course is for you! As implied by this iconic Shakespearean quote, The Play’s The Thing is all about writing, acting, directing and performing a series of plays that you will work with other students to create. Collaborating in small groups, you’ll perform the plays at the end of each week.

Rock Band NEW!
1 to 3pm | July 8-25 | Monday through Thursday

Expand upon your musical talent and learn how to work in a band, develop music-making skills and improve your playing and listening skills using a wide range of rock music styles — including country, rap and pop. Instruments will be provided, but guitar players are encouraged to bring their own instrument. The instructor will communicate with students prior to course start date to verify their instrument preferences.

You’ll have the chance to learn new musical instruments such as guitar, electric bass, drums, and keyboards. Also, explore an interest in singing with a group, deepen your understanding of the fundamental elements of music, study the history and evolution of rock music, explore live sound reinforcement techniques and use popular and rock music as the springboard to group music making! No previous ensemble experience is needed.

Graphic Design NEW!

Learning to Program in the Arduino Playground
1 to 3pm | July 8-25 | Monday through Thursday

So what’s an Arduino? Using a palm-sized microcontroller called an Arduino, you will learn the basics of programming in C/C++. First, you will learn basic programming through a series of challenges, such as making lights blink in patterns and motors, and making motors turn. You will also learn about basic electronics, as you will need to correctly wire the components together. We will end with a final challenge that can be presented to all.

Mystery Solved 2019

This classic course is back with all-new cases to investigate! You and other students will take on the roles of suspects, witnesses, attorneys and judges in this examination of literary and historical mysteries. Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot cases are featured, as well as unsolved real-life cases.
